Dr. Barney H. Miao is an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary. He received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University in 2026, with a Ph.D. minor in Computer Science. He previously earned an M.S. in Structural Engineering from Stanford University in 2023 and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 2021.
Dr. Miao leads the Smart Building Materials (SbM) Lab , where his research focuses on developing sustainable, intelligent, and circular construction materials. His work integrates bio-based materials, artificial intelligence, non-destructive sensing, and computational modeling to enable a decarbonized and resilient built environment.
His research has led to the development of novel lignin-based biopolymer composites and Engineered Biopolymer Composite (EBC), a carbon-negative alternative to conventional cementitious construction materials.
